L&B Farms

Thanks for visiting us here at L&B Farms. My name is Lauren Shifflett, and my husband and I manage our small farm here in Schuyler, Virginia. I have always dreamed of running my own homestead as I have always had a passion for animals and desire to be self sufficient. We began our adventure in February of 2020 after we purchased a small home and a few acres. My husband and I already had two dogs of our own, Damara and Callie, but they multiplied quickly thereafter. Soon we added tons of feathered friends to the mix learning the ins and outs of caring for our hens and collecting eggs. This first step sparked everything else to come being able to know what and where my ingredients were coming from, and know that the animals providing them were well cared for and loved. The more I learned about processed food, the more I wanted to raise my own without the harmful additives and preservatives. This pushed me to find a new love for cooking from scratch and using wholesome ingredients. One of the main interests of mine was baking. Over the last year I have maintained my sourdough starters and baked a variety of different sourdough items that we love. Turns out, a lot of other people love them too so I completed my Food Handler's Certification and began a small in home bakery offering a multiple list of baked goods. After seeing the love for my baked goods, I wanted to continue to learn and do more with our farm. With lots of poking and prodding my husband agreed to adding three Nigerian Dwarf Goats; Mikko, Poppy and Ellie Mae. These three have given us new life, fresh milk, and lots of laughs. These three have allowed me to do even more with our business and craft handmade goat milk soaps with all natural ingredients, plus very tasty milk that is the most similar to fresh cow's milk. Unexpectedly, my husband began talking of how much he has wanted pigs, so I got to work and that same day we added our four Kune Kune Piglets, Babe, Bacon, Charlotte and Wilbur. Soon after we added our gorgeous Rex Rabbits, Mocha and Cappuccino, and our fluffy Lionhead Rabbits, Pumpkin and Casper. Our homestead is forever growing and something I am so passionate about that I want to continue sharing it with family, friends and anyone that wants to learn like I did. I love knowing that at our farm, our animals are treated with love and respect and in return provide us with fresh wholesome products. I love knowing the food and products we use are safe from genetically modified ingredients and will continue to look for more ways to create a healthier lifestyle for us and others.
